WASHINGTON — Celebrex, approved by the Food and Drug Administration, had annual sales of about $10 billion for the last 12 months ending April, according to market research firm QuintilesIMS.
The drug is the second-biggest drug in the world to carry the drug approval, after the cholesterol-lowering drug Merck & Co.
The company said Tuesday that sales would come to an all-time high of $2.2 billion for the quarter ending April 1.
The company expects a total annual growth of 5 percent during the quarter, based on the latest quarterly report from its analysts, said the QuintilesIMS analyst. The market research firm said the company also expects the first-quarter annual growth to be at or below 5 percent. The company's market share grew 5 percent to 2.4 percent from the same period last year.
Pfizer Inc. said it expects the drug's annual sales to grow 8 percent in the first two months of this year, compared to the previous quarter of 16 percent. Pfizer analyst Les Funtleyder said the company's revenue growth was a little higher. He said the company has about a 30 percent growth rate in the first three months of this year.
The new drug is a version of a class of drugs that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
The Food and Drug Administration also approved Celebrex for treating osteoarthritis, according to QuintilesIMS.
The drug's sales have declined in recent years due to its lower cost, which makes it more affordable, but its revenue was still growing. The drug has a 10 percent market share of the U. S. dollar, based on its market size and the analysis by QuintilesIMS.
Celebrex is being prescribed to treat arthritis, but it also includes the pain reliever Arthrosine and the pain reliever Celebrex.
Pfizer said the company expects the first-quarter sales to grow from $846 million in the quarter to $906 million in the first six months of this year, based on a analysis by its analysts. The company's sales growth was 7 percent during the same period. The company expects sales to increase by 8 percent to $1.2 billion, based on the latest quarterly report from QuintilesIMS.
Pfizer, which has been based in New York since 2001, said its revenue growth rate was due to its lower cost. The company said the company has about a 30 percent growth rate in the first three months of this year.
Pfizer said the company had been reviewing its stock price. The company has a 15 percent market share in the next four to six months.
